Interesting post. As my kids get older, I find myself less nostalgic for that baby period. I still like to hold babies, and pictures and videos of them are cute, but their boringness has turned me off to them. Parents of older kids tell parents of babies that their kids need them more as they get bigger. This sounds impossible. How could anyone be more needy than an infant? But you're right. The things an infant needs tend to be predictable, by which measure one could call fulfilling their needs easy. The difficulty of age 4 is underrated. Terrible twos, sure, but a four-year-old is so concurrently wonderful and unmanageable that I'm so glad our youngest has attained the age of five. Kindergarten has transformed each of our children in turn. Some people think all of the rule-following and line-forming of kindergarten kills a child's soul. I think it's just another important step toward nest-leaving civilization.

This comment has sure rambled, but your post provoked a lot of different strains of thought simultaneously. Good for you for continuing to put in the effort it takes to raise your young patriot well.

You don't want me to get angry. I have a lot of evidence that shows that people are rather unhappy when I get angry.

These malapropisms melt away all too quickly, so it's important to capture them in media like this that are more dependable than parental memory. Of course, if you just keep peppering them into your own speech, they can last forever.

Amen, sister. These kinds of revelations are what makes getting some space from one's progeny every so often important. To some extent, you're in an age and stage of his development in which your personal freedom can look like it's gone for good. The more he grows and the more you ask him to do for himself, the more he and you will find that he can. On vacation this year (with kids in tow), Paige and I each read 3 books. That wouldn't have been possible even last year. But please don't take this as a "wait; it'll get better" comment. Take those steps you can take now for daily personal sanity and differentiated identity.

I've noticed this same phenomenon with Teddy (4). Yesterday, we were well behind his brother as he ran to the school bus stop (another just-in-time production!), and Teddy said "Charlie's shoe is untied." Charlie was across the street and no less than half a block away. I used to doubt my little eagle eye, but I don't anymore. I wonder if this is some kind of useful little kid survival skill that diminishes over time. A fly is much larger relative to a three-year-old than to us. And bee stings hurt and stuff like that.
